Background: Periklis Tsoukalas was born in Attica, 1970. He began to learn the guitar from the age of 10 and gave his first concert at 13. Brought up in a musical family (his father was in a member of "Crowns" and "Semprini" - both well-known bands), his parents helped him with his studies. After leaving home, he began his travels, which took him around various Arabic states and Greece for 15 years. He met Arabian Oud players and Indian Sitar players whilst learning various aspects of the Arabic and Indian musical traditions. Periklis has experience in a variety of musical genres and with numerous instruments, having had both informal and formal training. Education: Byzantine Music chant: with Manolis Sourgiadakis and Ioannis Aronis. Musical Instruments: 1. Oud- Private lessons with: Yurdal Tokcan, Necati Çelik. Master classes with: Yurdal Tokcan, Omar Bashir, Charbel Rouhana, Kamel Ferjani, Necati Çelik. 2. Sarod - with Vigit Singh. 3. Bansuri - with Chandra Kant Prasad. 4. Saz- with Mehmet Erenler. 5. Rabab (Afghan)- with Mohammad Rahim Kushnawaz and Khaled Arman. 6. Guitar (fretless, electric) -with various teachers. Professional Experience: 1. Lecturing Music Heraklion High School as a teacher of Greek traditional music Oud and Tambura. 2. Private music lessons 3. Music school. 4. Seminars: About the Oud and Ottoman Classical Music, music of East-Mediterranean, at music schools and unions in Crete. 5. Symposiums: Music of Greece & Turkey. Journey through Modes and Makam. 6. Program Manager / Artistic Director, in collaboration with the Centre for Inter-Mediterranean Co-operation with the participation of top Greek and Turkish musicologists and musicians. Includes concerts: Psarantonis, Claudia Delmer (Spain), Istanbul Sazendeleri (Turkey), Eastern Musical Workshop, Trio Roberto Brandan (Argentina), Loudovikos ton Anogion. 8. Radio productions: Radio-broadcasting with musicological analysis of world music, since 1994. 9. Author: Articles on music in journals and newspapers. 10. Concerts (in Greece and abroad): 1. World Music Institute, New York, Manhattan with Psarantonis and the Hainides ensemble. 2. Solo Oud Recitals - Performances with compositions of Greek, Turkish, Persian, Romanian, Armenian and Arabian composers. 3. Decades of concerts every year with 'Hainides' around Greece and abroad as band member (2003 - end of 2008) and as a main member (2000 present). 4. Main member of Endofonon from 12.08.2000 5.
