Flautist, Rowland Sutherland enjoys an international career in many different fields of music. He regularly performs in new music ensembles, jazz groups, symphony orchestras, various non-Western groups, pop outfits and as a soloist. Many of Rowland's solo contemporary flute performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio. He has composed and arranged music for bands, ensembles and for the BBC. Composition commissions include those written for the percussion quartet Ensemble Bash and the contemporary music groups New Music Players and Lontano the Fidelio Trio and the jazz trumpeter Chris Hodgkins. Rowland studied flute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama mainly with Kathryn Lukas and participated in master classes given by the late Geoffrey Gilbert. He studied jazz with the late pianist Lionel Grigson. Rowland is a professor at both the Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As an educator he has given workshops and/or coached at the Trinity College, Birmingham Conservatory and the Royal Academy of Music as well as York, Sussex and Durham Universities. He has played and recorded with a number of new music ensembles and dance companies. These include: The New Music Players, Ixion, Lontano, Icebreaker, Uroboros, Music Projects/London, Phoenix and Rambert Dance Company. Orchestras played with include Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bournemouth Symphony and Royal Ballet Sinfonia. In 2006 Rowland made his Prom debut at The Royal Albert Hall performing Steve Reich during his 70th birthday celebrations. Rowland Sutherland fronts his own band Mistura who perform Brazilian influenced jazz alongside Cuban and pan African grooves. They feature on his website: www.rowlandsutherland.com Over the years Rowland has been a member of several eminent jazz outfits. These included the big band Jazz Warriors founded by the prominent saxophonist Courtney Pine obe and Orphy Robinson's Sextet 'Annavas' and performed at a number of leading jazz festivals around the world. He also played in the colourful eleven piece jazz ensemble led by soprano and tenor sax player Mark Lockheart’s 'The Scratch Band', and composer Issie Barratts’ large ensemble Arrange of Space. |
